Dr Cascales is from Spain where she trained as a Clinical/Radiation Oncologist in one of the biggest hospitals in Spain: "Doce de Octubre" in Madrid. She undertook studies for an MSc in Medical Physics in 2011, focused in brachytherapy for early-stage penile cancer. In 2012-2013 she worked in Hospital Ruber Internacional (Madrid), where she developed knowledge about special techniques such as VMAT, IMRT, radiosurgery with cyberknife and image guided radiotherapy. She moved to France to work in the hospital she always dreamed working: Gustave Roussy (Villejuif, near Paris), which is the first oncology hospital in France, where the MDTs (Multi Disciplinary Meetings for Oncology patients) were created. She worked there with Cecile Le Pechoux for 15 months covering lung cancer and sarcoma, participating actively in MDTs, including Rhythmic (Thymic malignancies), Lung cancer and Sarcoma, being National reference in France for these disciplines. Moved by the curiosity of another healthcare system, she decided to work in the UK, initially as a locum in Bristol for 6 months in 2015 doing uro oncology, lung and breast cancer. She then moved to Carlisle to take a substantive post and learn more into depth NHS culture and functioning, so she was involved in the department, being a smaller hospital than most of the hospitals in UK. Dr Cascales moved to Scotland with the curiosity of working in a big cancer centre and worked at the Beatson-Glasgow for 6 years as a Consultant with special interest in Lung cancer, urological malignancies including penile cancer and germ cell, and renal cancer, developing the radiotherapy. She started at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre in June 2022 to work in the Lung Cancer and Sarcoma departments, where she is so excited to work in such a great hospital with a great team. She likes research as a part of enriching our clinical practice, to gain knowledge and to develop new treatments. Her hobbies are reading, writing, singing, listening to music, practicing sports (from yoga to personal defense for women, including body balance). She is a certified wellbeing coach and her aim is to improve the wellbeing of doctors. She is currently developing a project to prevent burnout in the department, being conscious of the pressures we can easily perceive on our day to day job.
