Ward 1
Overview
Ward 1 is the out patient oncology ward caring for patients with various types of cancer. We specialise in delivering a variety of cancer therapies, predominantly chemotherapy and immunotherapies. We also administer some supportive therapies. We are open from 0800 – 2000 hours. Patients will have a reclining chair for the duration of their treatment. Patients are welcome to bring laptops or other electronic devices as some treatments can be long day treatments. Wifi is available and the chairs have charger points. Complimentary therapies are available in the ward.
The ward Comprises 4 treatment areas. We have 2 bed spaces and examination rooms for privacy. The Advanced Nurse Practitioners run weekly SACT clinics and daily preassessment clinics.
Day cases
Day case SACT delivery in NHS Lothian is predominantly delivered in Ward 1 at the Western General, with a satellite day case facility for a limited number of regimes at St Johns Hospital. Where clinically required some SACT regimes are also delivered in the inpatient setting. The patients are mainly from Lothian area however patients also attend from the region (Fife, Borders and Dumfries and Galloway) if their SACT cannot be delivered locally, e.g. complex cases, Trials patients.
The existing Ward 1 service provides:
- Day case SACT and supportive therapies for oncology patients
- Day case SACT and supportive therapies for Haematology patients
- Pharmacy (aseptic and oral dispensing units and clinical verification area) for the above, and also for inpatients in the oncology and Haematology wards, and as required for outpatients attending the oncology clinics, the Breast Unit and Rheumatology clinics.

Visiting hours
Due to limited space in the ward we are unfortunately unable to accommodate visitors. But on patients first visit to the unit, when they are receiving a lot of information about their treatment and any potential side effects if they would prefer to have someone with them to hear that information. We can arrange translators for patients as required.
